This large ichthyosaur skull is of great historical importance. It was one of Mary Anning’s first major discoveries from Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast. Mary Anning was the first professional fossil collector on record. She found the skull in 1810 (when she was just 11 years old) and organized its excavation in 1811. Its scientific description dates back to 1814 when Everard Home described it as a cross between a lizard and a crocodile Its original name, Ichthyosaurus, meaning “fish lizard,” was coined in 1818 by Charles Konig. The whole animal would have been at least 16 feet long and a top predator in the Lower Jurassic seas that covered part of Britain.
